2012-12-20  Oxidized ores, which are usually extracted during surface mining, are the most common type of ore leached and are the most amenable to heap-leach methods, although gold ores that contain up to a few percent sulfide, usually as pyrite, can also be treated by the process. Ores with relatively high sulfide content and carbonaceous ores usually require pretreatment prior to leaching to achieve acceptable gold recoveries (Marsden and House, 2006). Other metals contained in the ores, such as cobalt, copper, and zinc, are also dissolved by cyanide and adversely affect overall gold recovery. Following extraction of the ore, the ore is either delivered to a crusher and reduced to a specific size before placement on the leach pad or hauled directly from the mine to the leach pads. Because leaching is most effective at a pH ranging from about 9 to 12, lime may be added to the ore to adjust the pH level prior to placement on the heap.
